Therapy for Queer and Trans People in North Carolina
There's a difference between a therapist who checked 'LGBTQ+ affirming' on a directory and one who actually understands what being queer is like.
Therapy should be a place where you don't have to educate your therapist about your own life. You shouldn't have to explain what binding is, how HRT works, why your family's reaction hurt even though it was "supportive," or what it's like to navigate medical systems that weren't built for you.
At Fathom Counseling, queer and trans experience isn't a specialty we added to a list. It's central to the work we do and to who we are.
What this looks like in practice:
We work with queer and trans adults navigating things like identity exploration and coming out at any stage of life, gender transition (social, medical, or both) and the grief and joy that come with it, family relationships that range from rejecting to complicated to "supportive but exhausting," navigating queer relationships, dating, and intimacy, minority stress and the way it accumulates in your body and your nervous system, internalized shame that doesn't always announce itself clearly, and the specific loneliness of being queer or trans in a rural area.
We don't treat your identity as the problem. We also don't pretend it's irrelevant to the problems you're bringing in. Most of the time, both things are true: you're here because of something specific (anxiety, a breakup, burnout, grief), and your experience as a queer or trans person shapes how that thing lands.
What we don't do:
We don't co-sign gatekeeping medical practices. We don't require you to prove your gender to us. We don't use your deadname. We don't assume your experience based on one piece of your identity.
How to get started:
We see clients virtually across North Carolina and in person in Boone. If you're looking for a therapist who already understands this part of your life, reach out for a free consultation. You can contact us via email, phone or text to ask questions or learn more about the process.
